I know, we are late - really late. The good news is: the client works now with both cards. The bad news is: There is no general OpenCL scheduler class for both AMD and nvidia. Hence I will write that now.

Some things you might want to mention about the OpenCL application:

1. Whether any minimum level of BOINC is required to run it.

2. Whether any minumum level of graphics card is required to run it.

3. Whether any specific account setting is required to run it.

4. Whether it will choose the GPU properly on computers with more than one graphics board, and one of them already has a non-OpenCL workunit running on it.

5. Whether any of these are not known yet, so you want to try enough possibilities in order to find out.

Urk, opencl seems to be a featureless developement platform :-P
I hope the new version (1.2) will help you.
Great work, Timo!!

When you think about how to do it, could you give us an opportunity to calculate the work packages in anonymous Plattform?

I dont know about poem@home but when you try to run gpu grid and folding@home at the same time it messes up your hard drive. So personally I would appreciate if it didnt.

Can we expect a working OpenCL application in 2011?

As always a terrible information policy... The GPU app has been promised for a week now. Sorry to be that harsh but couldn't you give us a more likely date instead of pranking us?

please tell us: how old are u and ur accomplishments in life?

by the way, on the forums in general, what an incredible aggression or/and frustration gpu apps seem to generate with the boinc user community... i do not really understand this phenomenon...

First of all i don't need to tell you anything about my achievements in my life you don't have to get personal here. Second: It's not about the GPU app it's rather about that not a single target date which has been announced on the front page has been adhered. I simply don't announce anything until I know that I'll get it done to 100% to a certain date.

Guys, calm down. It'll be ready when it's ready. What's the hurry? If you really can't wait, there's always GPUGRID to crunch for.

If the new work units are supposed to run using GPU memory, then you should consider making the work units finish in less than 180 hours.

Any chance that you can make use of Boinc 7.x.x that is under development.
Albert@Home is building OpenCl app on that boinc manager version....

Nobody intended on publishing false dates or putted deadlines knowing they were impossible to fulfill. As you *might* have noticed, all statements are given with some uncertainty as you never know in advance what will happen and what problems are still to overcome before some project will be finished.
In our case here, the GPU standalone app of POEM is working properly for quite some time now (btw: everyone here uses Linux) but unforseen and somehow unforseeable problems arose with the BOINC version. That's the reason why Timo had to delay the new GPU BOINC release again and again. And he has to do other work too like supporting the group members, writing papers etc. so he cannot always make the progress that would be desirable.

If you prefer a deadline that certainly will be fulfilled: christmas (but I did not tell you which year)...
Please don't get me wrong: I'm really enjoying being in this group and having the possibility of participating in such a project with a lot of interested and entusiastic participants (and I hope, next year I can use the BOINC client for calculations needed for my diploma thesis). But if you want fixed deadlines that will certainly be fulfilled, then you will not get any deadline at all as we can *never* assure that everything will work fine. Furtermore, if you start blaming us for things that happen and cannot be forseen, then motivation to get things done will probably not rise instantaneously...

If we had the choice, the GPU app certainly would be available already (what use is for us to delay it?) but it still will take a while, I'm afraid, especially as christmas approaches and people will be on vacations.

So, please stay patient, participate in other GPU projects in the meantime and check every now and then what news can be found here.
And despite of all deadlines and discussions: thanks for contributing!

Best regards,
Matthias

GPUGRID I think soon will have an app for ATI cards....

They have a thread in their forum for 2years now...

Keep up the work and i'll be running the OpenCl app when it is ready.

I've thought of a way to offer a deadline that can certainly be filled: Don't offer any deadline at all until you have the GPU application tested and are about to make it available.

If you need help testing it, do as some other BOINC projects do and allow the users to enable a Test class of which applications to run. Not required this time - enabling GPU use was sufficient since there were no previous GPU applications.

I saw a recent thread from GPUGRID saying that, at least initially, it will be for the recently announced HD 7xxx series of AMD/ATI cards only. They aren't sure if they will find ways to run it fast enough on the earlier AMD/ATI cards.
